“We plan to provide 100% electricity generation through renewable energy sources by the end of 2036.”
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Jone Usamate has stated this during the International Symposium on Renewable Energy, Environment and Climate Change 2019.
Usamate says achieving 100% electricity generation from renewable energy is not a simple task for Pacific Islands as renewable energy sources are often intermittent, capital intensive, research intensive and dependent on appropriate technology in the Pacific.
He says in Fiji there is now a strong emphasis on hydro electricity, solar and the continuing work on bio fuels.
The Pacific Region generates an average of 16.7% of electricity from renewable energy sources.
Usamate says Fiji is fortunate that it has abundant sources of hydropower which has allowed Energy Fiji Limited to produce about 59% of electricity from renewable energy sources.
Usamate says Energy Fiji Limited and the Department of Energy are working with its development partners to develop renewable energy projects to achieve the National Development Plan target.
