A 10 percent increase in crime has been recorded in January this year compared to the same period last year.
Police say while an increase has been recorded, the monthly overall crime rate has consistently remained below the average trend for the last five years.
They say there were 1,390 crime cases recorded last month, which is lower than the average of 1,513 cases recorded over the past five years.
During the month of January, the most prevalent offences were assault causing actual bodily harm with 315 cases reported.
There were also 280 cases of theft, 153 cases of unlawful possession of illicit drugs, 138 cases of burglary and aggravated burglary, and 84 cases of criminal intimidation.
Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew says community and police partnerships are vital in ensuring safe communities for all.
He has assured the Fijian public that officers remain committed to upholding their oath of service.
ACP Chew says there are thousands of officers who diligently and faithfully conduct their work in rural, maritime, and urban centers committed to the protection of life and property.
He is urging stakeholders in both the private and public sectors, civil society, and community leaders to assist the police through various crime prevention initiatives through the Community Policing Unit.
