Home Affairs Minister, Pio Tikoduadua has today confirmed that they have managed to resolve the issues raised by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander, Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai regarding the appointment of Filimoni Vosarogo as Attorney General.

When questioned about the contents of the letter sent by the RFMF Commander to him as the line Minister last week, Tikoduadua confirmed that the issues raised was regarding the constitutional requirements to be followed in appointing the Attorney General.

Tikoduadua says he can confirm to the people of Fiji that the issues raised by the RFMF have been resolved however the announcement regarding the cabinet reshuffle and the Attorney General appointment will be made by Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka.

Before coming for a press conference this afternoon, Tikoduadua says he had met with the Army Commander and the Prime Minister about the issues that were raised, and those issues were raised with the Prime Minister about Vosarogo’s appointment as the Attorney General.

The Home Affairs Minister stresses that they will adhere to the requirements under the 2013 Constitution.

Tikoduadua confirms that the appointment of Vosarogo is currently under review and will be reviewed, ensuring all constitutional mandates and the principles are adhered to.

He says they will also be in dialogue with legal stalwarts including the Fiji Law Society, ensuring that their step forward are informed, nurtured and reflective of their expert opinions.

The Home Affairs Minister also says as part of having faith in our democratic system, they pledge a transparent and accountable approach for all significant government appointments in the future.

He says they understand the gravity of the situation and the implications for our nation.

Tikoduadua says the Prime Minister recognises his prerogative, and will be making an official announcement regarding the position of Attorney General in due course, and the nation can trust that the decision will be in the best interest of our democracy, it’s pillars and our people.

He says his dialogue with the Prime Minister and the Commander have been focused on safeguarding the rule of law, and they remain committed to these principles.

Tikoduadua also personally extended his gratitude to the Army Commander for his invaluable insights.

Major General Kalouniwai had confirmed to fijivillage News last week that he had written to Tikoduadua raising their issues about the AG appointment however he referred us to the Minister to discuss the contents of the letter.
