Following serious concerns about sharing location of police checkpoints on messaging platforms, the police is urging people not to continue doing this as criminals can divert their route to avoid being checked for drugs or proper documentations.
People on a Viber group boasting more than 13,000 members are sharing locations of police checkpoints upon requests from other members.
The group usually informs the members of accidents and where the traffic is.
While responding to questions by fijivillage News, Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu says checkpoints are there for everyone's safety and awareness.
He says if people continue to warn other drivers on checkpoint locations, there are more chances of getting more drugs into our streets and more chances of having a road accident.
ACP Driu had earlier said they have increased their operation tempo from last month in order to create a safe environment during this festive season.
He says checkpoints are there as a sign of warning to everyone who has bad intentions and it also serves as an awareness to drivers, reminding them to prioritise their safety and of their passengers.
The Assistant Commissioner says through checkpoints, Police officers are able to seize drugs, charge people without proper documentation, carrying excessive passengers and more.
He adds they have also managed to stop people who were caught driving while under the influence of excessive liquor.
