A strong sentiment was shared by the Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, at the soft launch of the newly refurbished Golden Age Home in Labasa, where she highlighted that the thought of abandoning an elderly individual without any assistance and support from their family or caregivers is a concern and is frequently the harsh reality we witness.

Kiran says many residents at the home are there because they have no family support.

She says the Golden Age Home cares for 28 residents; 16 females and 12 males, with the oldest being 89-years-old, and the youngest being 40 years old.

She further says of the 28 residents, 86 percent have some form of physical or psycho-social disability.

The new facility now includes a sluice room, laundry, groundsman's room with state-of-the-art security camera system, changing rooms, a female ward, a spacious and fully equipped kitchen, daycare centre, leisure room, deck, a gym, physiotherapy room, conference room, and security booth which aligns with Fiji’s Aging Policy to ensure the elderly live with dignity and receive proper care.

The soft launch is attended by representatives from the government, private sector, and NGOs, all demonstrating their continued support for elderly care in the Northern Division.
