Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum

Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum reveals the Ministry of Sugar will announce a relief package for those sugarcane farmers whose farms have sustained damages during TC Yasa.

He says it is not only about giving an early cane payment as they are looking at a holistic package to ensure farmers can harvest some crop for next year’s crushing season.

The Permanent Secretary for Ministry of Sugar, Yogesh Karan says they are working on a program to assist the sugarcane farmers and he met with all the stakeholders of the Sugar Industry yesterday.

The CEO of Fiji Sugar Corporation, Graham Clark says they are assessing 3,360 farms.

Cane growers in Seaqaqa have requested government for a special cane payment as they are in dire need of cash. Some cane farmers have told Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum that sugarcane farmers should get money as they solely rely on cane farming and never step back from providing cane with an aim to always increase their tonnage.
