A 36-year-old man who raped a 51-year-old tourist from New Zealand in a resort in Yasawa in December last year will spend 9 years and 9 months behind bars.
The man had pleaded guilty to a count of rape.
While sentencing the man, Judge, Justice Sunil Sharma says the man committed a serious offence against the victim who was a visitor to our shores.
Justice Sharma says what was expected to be a happy holiday for the woman was spoilt by the man for his selfish reasons.
He adds the man was part of the hospitality and tourism industry and such behaviour does not give a good name to Fiji and its people.
Justice Sharma further says any amount of negative publicity involving tourists affects the tourism industry which should not be taken lightly adding the man’s actions towards the woman cannot be forgiven.
He says the man was so bold that he entered her room without a second thought.
A non-parole period of 8 years has been set.
