The Fiji Women’s Cricket under-19 team and officials presented their traditional i-tatau to the President of the Republic of Fiji, His Excellency Ratu Wiliame Katonivere at the State House before they leave for the East Asia World Qualifiers that will be held in Bali, Indonesia next week.
While accepting their i-tatau, Ratu Wiliame acknowledged the management and team for their commitment and sacrifices throughout the preparations.
He says cricket can be considered a minor sport but to have come this far is an achievement and to be the first female team to represent this country at a cricket tournament is another achievement.
Ratu Wiliame wished the team well in the tournament and urged them to enjoy themselves, listen to their coaches and always remember that they are representing Fiji and their families.
Fiji Cricket Head Coach Sanjiv Dubey says their preparations have been ongoing for the past few months and the girls are looking forward to the competition.
Dubey says this is the first time Fiji’s under-19 women’s side has qualified for the tournament in which the winner of the event will qualify for the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup next year.
He highlighted that the team was selected from various clubs around the country.
The East Asia World Cup Qualifiers will be held from May 14th to the 20th.
