The Fiji Women’s Basketball side is not wasting any more time as they got straight into training as soon as they touched down in Honiara on Tuesday ahead of the Pacific Games 2023 that kicks off tomorrow.
With the guidance of head coach Earl Hughes, the side have set their sight on achieving their ultimate goal of winning gold at this year’s event.
Coach Hughes says they are enjoying the hospitality so far but they are focused on the task ahead.
He says they are putting things together now as they look forward to their first game against Guam this weekend.
Captain Mickaelar Mendez says the biggest thing for them now is finally being together as a team in the Solomon Islands as they have been preparing for this tournament for many months.
Mendez says all the hard work has been done and it’s onto the game phase now.
Player Estelle Kainamoli says she is glad to have made it to her second Pacific Games and she is excited about the opportunity.
Kainamoli says this is a new environment and court and she is trying to adapt to it.
She says they are really looking forward to their first game this weekend.
The Fiji Women’s Basketball side will play Guam in their first game at 3pm tomorrow.
They will play the Solomon Islands at 4.45pm Saturday in their second pool game before playing Samoa at 10am Monday in their final pool match.
Meanwhile, the Fiji Men’s Basketball side will play Tahiti at 9am Saturday in their first pool match, they will then take on Tonga at 7pm Monday in their second pool match before playing New Caledonia at 4.45pm Tuesday in their final pool match.
