The Fiji National University's state of the art $9 million Sports and Wellness Centre was officially opened by Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum today.
The facility has rooms that can be used for conferences, a gym and an indoor court that has Olympic standard flooring.
Equipment for cardio training, rehabilitation, cross-fit and weight lifting, circular machine stations and indoor running for testing and fitness are available in the gym.
FNU Vice Chancellor Toby Wilkinson says they were told that installing the Olympic standard flooring would require specialist contractors to fly over from Australia.
He says the pandemic made this impossible.
He says this centre will facilitate the delivery of their Bachelor of Sports Education and Exercise Science Program which includes units such as Coaching and Refereeing, Sports Management and Organisation, Sports Medicine, Strength and Conditioning, Sports Nutrition, Sports Physiotherapy and Sports Tourism.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Sayed-Khaiyum says this centre is in-fact an indication of their commitment of tapping into raw talent.
At the moment, only FNU students and staff can use the gym.
Membership is expected to be opened up to members of the public in the next months.
