Four people were killed in the shooting at Apalachee High School, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Nine people were taken to the hospital with injuries, the bureau added in a new statement.
They also said the suspect was alive and in custody.
US President Joe Biden has just released a statement on the shooting, saying he and First Lady Jill Biden are mourning the deaths of those whose lives were cut short due to more senseless gun violence.
Biden says what should have been a joyous back-to-school season in Winder, Georgia, has now turned into another horrific reminder of how gun violence continues to tear their communities apart.
He says they cannot continue to accept this as normal.
The president went on to call for a ban on assault weapons and high capacity magazines as he has called for before, as well as other gun control measures, including safe storage of firearms.
