The Wales 7s team broke a fourteen game losing streak as they pulled off the biggest upset of the Sydney 7s so far with a spectacular 28-15 win over crowd favourites the Vodafone Fiji 7s team this afternoon.
This is their first win against Fiji since Gold Coast, 2013.
A decision by coach Gareth Baber to start Emosi Mulevoro ahead of Jerry Tuwai in the match cost Fiji the win.
Fiji had problems with defense, struggled at the line-out and at most times failed to complete their passes which allowed Wales to dominate possession in the match.
Alivereti Veitokani and Joeli Lutumailagi scored Fiji’s tries in the first half.
Fiji trailed Wales 21-10 at halftime.
Wales started the attack early when Morgan Williams scored the first try with only 55 seconds into the match.
Williams then went on to score two other tries to complete his hat-trick.
Jerry Tuwai scored the last try for Fiji.
The Fiji 7s team will now need to win their final pool match against France at 8.29 tonight to qualify for the quarter finals.
The Gold Medal Quarter Finals will start at 12.58pm tomorrow, the semis will start at 4.53pm while the final will kick off at 7.51pm.
