WAF clarifies tap water is safe for human consumption

The CEO of the Water Authority of Fiji has made it clear that our tap water is treated and is safe for human consumption.

Opetaia Ravai has totally rejected the Fiji Times article which said that the water quality in Fiji is worse than Uganda.

It has been made clear that experts who did some tests were testing untreated water which was not supplied by the Water Authority of Fiji.

In a press conference this afternoon, Ravai said that over 700,000 people in Fiji drink tap water every day.

Ravai said no one has died after drinking the tap water that is being supplied by the Authority.

Meanwhile, Rotary Pacific Water For Life Foundation Chairman Warwick Pleass said the newspaper article has completely misquoted the Rotary Pacific Water Foundation.

Pleass said the statement had nothing to do with the quality of water from the tap provided by the Water Authority of Fiji.

He said the WASH experts who came to Fiji did conduct some water tests but not on Water Authority of Fiji water.

Pleass said they were visiting some communities in the Western Division that do not have Water Authority of Fiji supply, nor any improved water sources.

He said they work closely with the Water Authority of Fiji in many ways regarding provision of safer water to disadvantaged and rural communities.
