Heavy rain has started in some areas in the Northern and Western parts of the country as Tropical Cyclone Pam which is located about 1,050 kilometres far North West of Nadi was upgraded to Category 3 overnight.
Tropical Cyclone Pam is located near 10.5 South 170.3 East.
It is slow moving and continues to track Southwards at this stage.
Acting Director of the Nadi Weather Office, Aminiasi Tuidraki said on its current track, it is closer to Vanuatu than the Fiji group.
Cyclone Pam is expected to be upgraded to a Category 4 system in the next 12 to 24 hours.
Tuidraki said Tropical Cyclone Pam is becoming so broad that it will bring a lot of rain from tonight.
He said the rain measured around the system is already about 200 to 300 millimetres in 24 hours.
Tuidraki said this would be the main concern for Fiji at this stage.
Tuidraki said they will give further projections on wind speeds later today.
Based on the current projected track, Pam is expected to pass to the far West of the country and we may have winds of up to 50 kilometres per hour.
People have been urged to take precautions as Fiji is expected to experience the indirect effects of the tropical cyclone from later today.
