Fiji Met Service tracking Cyclone Pam

The tropical depression located near Solomon Islands is upgraded to a tropical cyclone.

Cyclone Pam is a category one system at this stage and is located near 9.2 South 170.4 East.

Please note that the cyclone is located about 1,000 kilometres to the far North West of Fiji.

Acting Director of the Nadi Weather Office, Aminiasi Tuidraki says they have given ample time to people from Sunday to ensure that people take all precautions before the system comes closer to Fiji starting from early Thursday.

The cyclone is moving in a South East direction at 6 knots, and is intensifying.

People have been urged to take precautions as Fiji is expected to experience the indirect effects of the tropical cyclone from late tomorrow.

Tropical Cyclone Pam is currently slow moving, but expected to move southwards in the next 24 hours.

On the projected path, it is expected to pass to the southwest of Fiji.

At this stage, the system is not expected to directly affect Fiji.

However, from tomorrow and into Friday, the associated active rain bands will bring heavy rain and strong winds.

Tuidraki said there is also a threat of flash flooding later this week and people should be prepared.
