TC Tino moves closer to the Northern Division

Tropical Cyclone Warning as at 4:54PM Friday 17 Jan 2020

A Tropical Cyclone Warning remains in force for the Eastern half of Viti Levu, whole of Vanua  Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Cikobia, Yasawa, Lau and Lomaiviti groups.

The Nadi Weather Office says the centre of Category 1 Tropical Cyclone Tino is located about 150 kilometres North of Labasa.

Close to it’s centre, the cyclone is expected to have damaging winds gusting to 100 kilometres per hour.

Tino is moving South East towards the Fiji Group at about 27 kilometres per hour.

Weather Office Director, Misaele Funaki says Cyclone Tino is expected to make landfall over Vanua Levu from this evening.

Expect damaging winds and continuous heavy rain over Vanua Levu, Eastern half of Viti Levu and nearby islands this afternoon, tonight and tomorrow.

Tino is also anticipated to become a Category 2 cyclone tomorrow.

Please also note that damaging winds will be felt before and after the centre of the cyclone passes over the Fiji Group.

Strong winds may cause loose objects to fly, damage to root crops and break tree branches. It may even cause damages to weak structures and blow away roofs when it intensifies to damaging winds later today.

A heavy rain warning remains in force for the Fiji Group.

Flash flooding of low lying areas and sea flooding should be expected along coastal areas especially during high tides.

A flash flood warning remains in force for all low lying areas, low streams and flood-prone areas for the whole of Fiji. Areas of immediate concern are areas in the upper Wainimala River, and areas from Vuya to Nawaca Village in Bua.

A flood alert is now in force for the low lying areas and small streams from Dreketilailai to Qawa River.

Please note the next high tide is at 10 minutes after midnight.

Navua Police confirms that flood waters in all areas in Navua are receding.

They say there are currently 45 people are taking shelter at LDS Church in Calia, Navua while 26 people are taking shelter at the Old Navua Hospital.

Police say these people are in the evacuation centres from last night as it was raining heavily.

They say although the flood waters are receding in the area, some people cannot go home because their houses have to be cleaned up.

Speaking to Legend FM News, Arieta Seavula says they continue to experience strong winds and heavy rain.

Seavula says strong winds and heavy rains have started at about 1pm today.

Police officers are now patrolling Labasa and Savusavu towns to ensure people are not loitering around as these two towns have been closed and people have been sent home to prepare for TC Tino.

Chief of Operations, ACP Maretino Qiolevu says they have enough manpower in Vanua Levu to carry out rescue operations going into the night.

He says they are in contact with various turaga ni koro to ensure villagers move to higher grounds as TC Tino is expected to make landfall over Vanua Levu.

119 people are taking shelter in 5 evacuation centres in the country

119 people are taking shelter in 5 evacuation centres in the country.

There are three evacuation centres in the Northern Division.

17 people have taken shelter at the Rabi Council Office, 17 people are at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Rabi while 17 people are also taking shelter at Farm Catholic Hall in Rabi. 

In the Central Division, 42 people are taking shelter at LDS Church in Calia, Navua while 26 people are taking shelter at the Old Navua Hospital.

Villagers of Lomanikoro in Bua are preparing themselves for Tropical Cyclone Tino that is expected to make landfall over Vanua Levu this evening.

Village headman, Emosi Baleiyasawa says they continue to experience heavy rain and strong winds.

 

Four roads in the Central Division and 2 in the Western Division are closed

Vunaniu Bridge in Serua along Queens Highway remains open to single lane.

Four roads in the Central Division and two in the Western Division are closed.

In the Central Division, Vatilili Road at Waidradra Crossing and Waitaqolo Road at Waitaqolo Crossing in Naitasiri are closed because they are under water.

Navulokani Road at Waiwatu Crossing in Naitasiri is also closed as it is approaching a washout while Wailoa Road in Naqelewai in Naitasiri is closed because of a landslip. 

Navilawa Road and Chuni Lal Road Nadi are also closed because of flooding in the Western Division.

All roads in the Eastern and Northern Division remain open.

She says they are currently experiencing strong winds.

 

Labasa police  working with Commissioner Northern to map out strategies for cyclone preparedness measures

Police Chief of Operations, ACP Maretino Qiolevu says police officers in Labasa are working closely with the Commissioner Northern to map out strategies for cyclone preparedness measures and rescue operations.

He says officers at various police stations and police posts in the North are also on standby monitoring the weather system and people’s movements.

Qiolevu says they do not want the unnecessary movement of people in the North.

He says their officers will continue to patrol Labasa Town to ensure there is no unnecessary movement.

Qiolevu adds they have dedicated teams ready for the Eastern half of Viti Levu.

Acting CEO of Nausori Town, Lydia Racule says they will make an assessment at 4pm whether to close Nausori and Korovou towns.

Racule says both towns are open at the moment as the weather is not that bad however the council has activated it’s standby team.

She says earlier today she had gone with a team to visit various areas in Nausori and all areas are clear in terms of drainage, flooding and road blockages.

Waidradra River in Navua has burst it's banks and caused flooding in the area

Waidradra River in Shrinagar Road, Navua has burst its bank as it continues to rain heavily in the area since morning.

A resident, Sanam Prasad says there are 16 houses in the area and they are not very far away from the river.

Prasad says people are currently tying their houses and are moving their livestock to a safer location.

She says all children in the area did not go to school today due to heavy rain last night which led to the flooding of Waidradra River.
