Minister for Defence, Inia Seruiratu says he is gravely concerned about crimes against women and children as 10 women have lost their lives at the hands of their partners and any loss is not only felt by the victim’s family but the nation.
Seruiratu highlighted this while speaking at the Basic Recruits Pass Out Parade at the Nasova Grounds.
He says the number of women who have lost their lives this year due to domestic violence is disturbing.
Seruiratu says despite the ongoing public attacks against the work of the Fiji Police Force, they know that a lot of effort has been directed towards curbing crime, and this has resulted in a 5% reduction in overall crime from January to September this year.
The Minister says in the past few weeks there has also been a tragic moment for a number of families who have lost their loved ones in senseless motor vehicle accidents.
He says that he acknowledges the effort made to reduce the number of road fatalities and accidents by the leading road enforcement agency.
He says people will always be quick to point the blame on the Fiji Police Force because that is the perception of policing and in that they are expected to keep everyone safe.
