Police controlling traffic in Suva

Many people have commended the Fiji Police Force for coming out and ensuring that there is no jaywalking along Rodwell Road in Suva City from this morning.

Police officers were on the ground to ensure that pedestrians and motorists follow the road rules.

This resulted in proper traffic flow during the peak traffic time.

Fijivillage had raised the issue with Police regarding the chaotic situation day in day out where people could be seen jaywalking all over the place and numerous cases of illegal parking and stopping of vehicles.

While Police had said that there was a shortage of manpower, Fijivillage had asked if they could spare a few officers to ensure that the hub of the city has proper order when it comes to road rules and to ensure that those breaking the law are taken to task.

Illegal parking seen along Rodwell Road in Suva before Fijivillage raised the issue with Police

Director Operations Senior Superintendent of Police Maretino Qiolevu says officers were deployed this morning and while they had picked up a few issues of concern with regards to the behaviour of both pedestrians and drivers, Police were happy with their level of cooperation when asked to adhere to road rules this morning.

Qiolevu says at the same time they hope that the same level of cooperation continues to be seen when officers are not physically present at all times and at every location.

However Police have confirmed that they will be at the location during the peak traffic hours and also raise awareness on jaywalking before starting the fining process.

Police are also calling on drivers especially PSV drivers to adhere to the road rules and regulations as illegal parking is causing the traffic jams especially during peak hours.

Qiolevu says they will be out during this Operation Tatarovi period and will book those parking illegally especially as designated areas have been allocated that ensures the safety of their passengers which should be paramount at all times.

Fijivillage witnessed some mini buses continued to park in no parking zones this morning.

Police have confirmed that they will address this issue.
