Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama will officially open the $43 million Wainisavulevu Weir Raising Project in Monasavu today.
The commissioning of the Wainisavulevu Weir Raising Project will boost the country’s electricity supply and save the Fiji Electricity Authority $2.5 million in diesel costs annually.
Wainisavulevu Weir forms part of the whole Monasavu Hydro Electric Scheme.
Water captured at the Wainisavulevu Weir travels 1.55km to the Wainikasou Power Station where the first set of electricity is generated.
The discharged water from Wainikasou Power station then travels through a series of tunnels which runs 11km and connects to the Monasavu Dam.
Water from the Monasavu Dam then travels to the Wailoa Power Station where another set of electricity is generated then distributed around the country.
FEA’s Major Projects General Manager, Fatiaki Gibson says they started working on the project in 2012.
Gibson says the project is a big achievement for the company and the county.
