The National Fire Authority has responded to 9,611 calls for ambulance services in the last three years.
This was highlighted by the Minister for Local Government, Infrastructure and Transport Parveen Bala while speaking at the handing over of three new ambulances to the National Fire Authority in Walu Bay today.
Bala says that 3,200 calls are received by the NFA in a year just for ambulance services which comes down to 266 calls a month.
He adds that the great demand for ambulance services has prompted the procurement of the new ambulances to add to the fleet of six ambulances.
Bala also stressed that the National Fire Authority plays a significant role in fire and emergency responses in Fiji and the government has invested $269,400 to be able to help facilitate the three new ambulances.
He says that the National Fire Authority now has a total of nine ambulances of which there is one in each Fire Station to service its communities and this includes Fire Stations in Nausori, Suva, Valelevu, Sigatoka, Ba and Labasa.
The three new ambulances handed over to NFA today will be used to service areas in Korolevu in Sigatoka, Korovou and Suva which will now have two ambulances.
