The Legal Aid Commission is currently handling 9,967 criminal cases before the courts.

Speaking at the opening of the Regional Legal Aid Conference at InterContinental Resort and Spa, Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum also highlighted that there are 3,319 family law cases before the courts through the Legal Aid Commission.

He says there are 2,014 in the civil division.

Sayed-Khaiyum says as far as advice work is concerned civil advice is actually the dominant one with 51 percent followed by advice on family law which is 33 percent and 16 percent for criminal law advice.

Sayed-Khaiyum also stressed that services provided by the Legal Aid Commission must keep up with the times.

Delegates from the Cook Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Palau, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu are part of the conference.

Speakers from South Africa, Canada, Brazil, Europe, Tanzania and Maldives will be sharing their perspectives during the conference.

The Legal Aid Commission also launched its new 3 year strategic plan which aims to increase the Commission’s effectiveness in providing access to justice to poor and vulnerable Fijians who cannot afford private lawyers.

The Regional Legal Aid conference will finish on Friday.
