The Great Council of Chiefs will not be reinstated as the government believes in common and equal citizenry as stated in the constitution.

That’s Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama’s statement in parliament as Opposition MP, Niko Nawaikula raised the question on whether Bainimarama will restore the GCC.

Bainimarama said the GCC was established by the British administration in 1875 and it is not an Itaukei institution.
