Fiji will soon have a special $7 note and coloured commemorative coins to commemorate the Fiji rugby 7s team’s historic gold medal win at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Fijivillage has received information from reliable sources that the new $7 note and commemorative coin will be unveiled in the next few weeks and it will feature the victorious Fiji 7s team and former coach, Ben Ryan.
Ryan is also expected to be at this special ceremony.
Fijivillage has asked Reserve Bank of Fiji Governor, Barry Whiteside about the new $7 note however he has not made any comments.
The Guardian had reported last year in a Ben Ryan story that Fiji is introducing a special $7 bill with Ryan’s face on it.
However we have received confirmation that the gold medal winning team will be prominently featured on the note and coin.
The Reserve Bank has already confirmed that a coloured commemorative circulation coin will be issued in early 2017 to commemorate the Olympic gold medal win.
Whiteside has confirmed that the RBF Board of Directors had, at its July 2016 meeting, approved the minting of a coloured commemorative circulation coin in limited quantities should Fiji win a gold medal at the Rio Olympics.
This will be the first coloured commemorative circulation coin for Fiji.
Only a limited quantity of this coloured commemorative circulation coin will be minted, which means that it would fast become a collector's item for the general public.
