Deputy General Secretary for the Ministry of Employment Vilimone Baleidrokadroka

Deputy General Secretary for the Ministry of Employment, Vilimone Baleidrokadroka says that they have been in consultation with employers and employees on whether the National Minimum Wage should be increased or not at the review of the National Minimum Wage and Wage Regulations.

The current national minimum wage applies to those that have no qualifications whatsoever prior to working.

Baleidrokadroka says that the aim is for the income of the employees to balance with their needs.

He says that most employers agree that if needed, they can increase the national minimum wage, but one of their biggest problems is the high absenteeism rate from workers without any genuine reason.

Baleidrokadroka says that this affects production and in return reduces revenue for the company.

He adds that the Ministry is accumulating data from employers and employees on whether there is a balance in productivity and the wages of the employees which will the be filed in a report and presented to the Minister for Employment.

The review of the National Minimum Wage and Wage Regulations was held yesterday at the Tanoa Plaza in Suva.
