An elderly woman was rescued by firefighters from her house which was destroyed in a fire at Spring Street in Toorak, Suva last night.
The National Fire Authority say the wooden and corrugated iron house was occupied by an elderly couple who lived in the house with their son.
The NFA say the elderly woman was trapped in the house when the fire started and access to locate the woman was very difficult due to the fire and the collapsed and hot corrugated roofing irons.
The NFA says they fought hard against windy conditions to stop the fire from spreading and destroying the adjacent three-storey building and neighbouring wooden homes.
They say after they managed to contain the fire and by the Grace of God, they found the elderly woman sheltered in one of the amenities unharmed.
They add the fire had actually burnt everything, up to the area where she was sheltered.
