A few disciplinary issues could cost Fiji – Raiwalui

By Alipate Narawa

Despite the 28-12 win against Wales in their first pool match of the LA 7s, Fiji Airways 7s team had a lot of disciplinary issues and were giving away penalties.

This has been highlighted by our rugby commentator, Fred Raiwalui who says there were a lot of isolated plays in the first half and Fiji were penalised 4 times for not rolling away at the tackle area.

Raiwalui says there was a bit of a shaky start, but they managed to find their rhythm, especially when experienced players like Jerry Tuwai and Josua Vakurunabili came on to the field.

With a couple of players coming back into the team such as Joseva Talacolo and Iosefo Masi, Raiwalui says it should not take long for them to gel and get their combinations going.

Fiji will face France in their second pool match at 9.31am today and Ireland at 1.05pm.

South Africa out of 7s series title contention

By Alipate Narawa

South Africa are out of the running for the HSBC 2021/2022 Sevens Series title after losing two of their LA 7s pool games earlier today.

South Africa went down 21-7 to the hosts USA in their first pool match.

While they were able to win their second pool match 12-0 against Canada, New Zealand were too strong as they bundled them out of the cup competition with a convincing 17-14 win.

Now that South Africa is out, it’s a three way race to get the title between Australia(122), Argentina(118), and Fiji(104).

If Australia progresses to the cup semi-finals, they will be crowned the series winners.

Fiji still has a chance if they win the tournament, and Australia loses in the quarter finals and also loses in the plate semi-finals.

Argentina just needs to progress to the final to win the series if Australia gets knocked out.

Fiji needs to fix discipline and defence - Moto

By Alipate Narawa

Fiji needs to fix their discipline and defence issues before their match against Ireland.

Our rugby commentator and former Fijiana Flanker, Mere Moto says the 29-19 win against France in their second pool match does not justify the issues faced in the team.

Moto says with the players letting the French in through their defensive line and allowing them to score first, they had to play catch up just like they did in their first game.

Fiji faces Ireland at 1.05pm for their last pool match.

They are through to the quarter final with their opponent yet to be decided.
