As national leaders, we must acknowledge the significant contributions made to our country by all religious groups, in the areas of education and spiritual and community life.

This was highlighted by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad as he wished Fiji’s Muslim community a blessed celebration as they observe the Birthday of the founder of Islam, Prophet Muhammad.

Professor Prasad says as a Messenger of God, Prophet Muhammad preached peace, inclusivity, tolerance and ethical conduct, and we must reflect on his teachings.

He says principles of social, ethical, moral and religious conduct are the bedrock of social, economic and political advancement.

He adds our Muslim community, was, is and will be an important stakeholder in the progress of this all-important objective.

Professor Prasad says this is the basis for lasting peace, harmony and tolerance and it is also vitally important for inclusivity, equality, dignity and justice.

The Deputy PM says in 1974, the then National Federation Party and Opposition Leader Siddiq Moidin Koya negotiated with the then Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, for Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday and Diwali celebrations to be designated as public holidays as a mark of recognition for the Indo-Fijian community.

Professor Prasad says this was bipartisanship in the national interest.
