Using children to beg on the streets is a criminal offence and it is strictly prohibited under the laws of Fiji and people should stop using innocent children under the pretense of collecting money for their benefit.

This was highlighted by the Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran while addressing the public this holiday season.

Kiran says such actions expose children to significant risks, including exploitation, abuse, harm, and deny them their right to a safe and nurturing environment.

She says the Ministry emphasises that parents and guardians have a legal obligation to ensure the welfare and safety of their children, and encouraging or forcing children to beg violates their rights and contravenes national laws designed to protect them.

Kiran stated that the parents of these children who are doing this to children have been warned and also cautioned that anyone else found encouraging or facilitating this unlawful practice will face legal consequences.

She adds the Ministry, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, will not hesitate to prosecute offenders to safeguard the wellbeing of children.

Kiran is urging all members of the public to report any incidents of children begging to the authorities.
