The death penalty needs to be introduced in Fiji to deter drug traffickers from bringing huge quantities of drugs from around the world to our country as Fiji is a soft spot and a transit hub for drug peddlers around the globe.

This has been stressed by Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Lynda Tabuya during a press conference at the Civic Towers.

Although corporal punishment is unlawful under the 2013 Constitution, Tabuya says Fiji needs to claim it's sovereignty as a state and send a message out there to all drug lords, to protect the interests of our people.

She says the drug problem in Fiji is a problem which has existed from the past, and was never brought to light.

Tabuya says the Coalition Government is highlighting the issue, which has already gone out of control destroying families, communities, and the country.

She says the multifaceted issue with drugs is almost reaching the heights of being a national crisis and the Government and various stakeholders are working to minimize this.

She has reiterated the need for stronger penalties.

Tabuya says the people in Fiji are vulnerable to these drug lords and the government will continue with the huge awareness campaigns to battle this issue.
