Successful snap checkpoints conducted by the Police led to the arrests of citizens caught with marijuana and methamphetamine in different parts of the country, including a man in his 20s, who was found with dried leaves believed to be marijuana at a shopping complex in Laucala Beach yesterday.

Assistant Commissioner of Police – Operations (ACP) Livai Driu says a Southern Division team conducted a spot check yesterday on a group of youths loitering at a shopping complex in Laucala Beach, where they found the man in his 20s with the illicit substance.

He says divisional task forces are setting up checkpoints based on tips and information gathered and conducting searches on individuals found to be acting suspiciously.

ACP Driu says those they find loitering or acting suspiciously, will be searched and warned to leave if they do not have any valid reason for being where they are found.

He says police and concerned citizens are working together to disrupt, dismantle, and destabilize the illicit drug trade.

In the Northern Division, a tip led to the arrest of a man involved in the alleged sale and distribution of illicit drugs, namely marijuana.

Police say the information gathered was that the suspect had received a supply intended for sale, and a search conducted at the suspect’s home resulted in the seizure of several plastic bags containing dried leaves believed to be marijuana.

The suspect remains in police custody. ACP Driu highlighted that other raids and snap checks conducted throughout the week resulted in the seizure of illicit drugs, namely methamphetamine and marijuana.
