Today marks a new chapter in the life of Rupeni Ragia Mudunavuku, who has witnessed a significant change in his vision after receiving free eye surgery from the visiting Chinese Bright Journey Medical Team at Pacific Eye Institute in Suva.

The team is targeting to conduct 60 eye surgeries.

Mudunavuku says he learned about this free surgery opportunity when he attended Fiji Showcase, where he was able to get an eye checkup from the Pacific Eye Institute.

He says many of us often overlook the importance of our eyesight and only seek help when we start experiencing issues like cataracts.

The 70-year-old urges everyone to take care of their eyes, as they are essential to seeing the world around us.

Acting Head of the Eye Department, Elenoa Raikabakaba says in Fiji and across the Pacific, cataracts is the leading cause of visual impairment.

Raikabakaba says yesterday, 34 patients underwent surgery, with more expected today.

Chinese Ambassador to Fiji Zhou Jian says the free eye surgeries have helped many Fijians return to normal lives.

Jian adds it also brings hope to families who have witnessed these life-changing improvements.
