Worrying statistics have come forward as 63 people committed suicide, while 44 attempted suicide from January 1st to August 22nd this year, according to the Fiji Police Force.

Acting Commissioner of Police, Sakeo Raikaci says there were eight suicide and five attempted suicide cases where the victims were below the age of 18.

He says those above 60 years recorded the highest number of reported cases, with 19 suicide and two attempted suicide cases.

The Acting Commissioner says there was a higher prevalence of suicide cases among males, with 50 reported cases.

ACP Raikaci adds the statistics are extremely worrying, highlighting the growth of social issues confronting the society today.

He says there is a need to nurture a more understanding and supportive culture of acceptance and create safe spaces to talk.

ACP Raikaci says as we deal with modern challenges of policing, another challenge is the issue of cyberbullying, and they are calling on all Fijians to be more caring in the virtual world.

He adds some of the reasons linked to suicide and attempted suicide cases have been spousal disputes, family disputes, relationship problems, stress and illness.
