The National Fire Authority is calling on people not to use fire as a means to resolve arguments.

NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane says they believe that the fire that destroyed a home in Jittu Estate in which a woman lost her life was a suicide and arson case.

He says there have been a few cases other than this where couples have resorted to fire to settle arguments.

When questioned about what fire safety measures could be implemented in homes that are in squatter settlements to prevent the spread of fire to other homes, Puamau says there is a housing standard within the municipal boundaries that should be followed.

He says this includes the spacing, building materials and proper planning of homes.

The CEO says another measure people can follow is the use of fire safety appliances.

According to the National Fire Authority, two people have passed away in a fire this year, where the first incident involved a 65-year-old man residing in Narere in January.

The CEO says an average of 6 fire fatalities per year were recorded by them since 2016.

He says last year and 2018 were the lowest, with 3 fire fatalities.
