An influx of students graduating in Aged-Care training has caused the Ministry of Education to temporarily suspend the aged-care training program.
Fiji Higher Education Commission Chair Steve Chand says over 4,800 students who graduated with Age Care training certificates are still unemployed.
He says if there is no employability pathway for these students, it does not serve a purpose.
Chand says care-giving is not a local segment, and they are seriously looking at engaging with bilateral partners to see how well and quickly they can start staircasing these graduates.
He adds their report last year concurred with their findings of the oversupply of caregivers in Fiji without employment.
When questioned by fijivillage News when the suspension will be lifted as some private institutions are running a business to provide such training, the Higher Education Commission Chairman says he cannot guarantee when the suspension will be removed.
He says they will re-look at this until they are able to see some of these students moving away and gaining employment.
