Nestlé Fiji has donated $100,000 to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to assist the people of Vanuatu in the aftermath of the 7.3 and 6.1 magnitude earthquakes that have claimed at least 14 lives, left hundreds injured, and devastated infrastructure in Port Vila.
The much-needed fund will aid emergency relief and recovery efforts in Vanuatu.
IFRC Regional Director Katie Greenwood expressed her gratitude to Nestlé for their longstanding partnership, particularly during times of need.
She says the earthquake in Vanuatu has affected the urban centre of Port Vila more severely than any previous disaster in the region.
Greenwood says IFRC has launched a global appeal, aiming to raise 5 million Swiss francs to support Vanuatu Red Cross’s emergency relief and recovery efforts.
She says there is an urgent need for shelter, water, and psychological first aid, with the damage to water infrastructure and the trauma experienced by the community particularly concerning.
She adds that partnerships like Nestlé’s are critical in ensuring quick access to resources, allowing life-saving work to begin immediately.
Meanwhile, Nestlé Fiji and Pacific Islands General Manager, Tim Inskter says Nestlé has had a long and positive relationship with Vanuatu, and as the people of Vanuatu have supported Nestlé over the years, it is only natural for the company to provide assistance when needed.
Inskter says the people of Vanuatu are in desperate need of the support as they face the aftermath of the earthquakes.
He says our heart goes to everyone affected and hope this donation to the Vanuatu Red Cross Society will provide some support for on the ground humanitarian aid efforts.
He commends the tireless efforts of the first responders in Vanuatu and the dedicated work of Vanuatu Red Cross Society aid workers, who are helping those affected.
