The Fiji Police Force has arrested three people for possession of marijuana, seven for drinking in public places, four for being drunk and disorderly, one for obstructing police in carrying out their duty and 4 people for breaching curfew in the past eight days in Nausori Town.

This comes as Police have increased their presence in Nausori Town by having more patrols, deployment of a command vehicle and installation of CCTV cameras because businesses had raised concerns about increased levels of illegal activities in Nausori.

Police have also installed 9 CCTV cameras in Nausori Town while the business community has also provided 4 more cameras to be installed soon.

Cameras have been installed to monitor the illegal sale of alcohol at supermarkets and on both ends of Brown Lane in Nausori Town.

Businesses have raised concerns about Brown Lane being a red zone for illegal activities.

Police have also proposed the installation of additional cameras at Agro Marketing, which is at the end of the Town, more cameras at Brown Lane, town end of Rewa Bridge, Ratu Cakobau Park, TFL Tower and in Dilkusha as well.

The cameras are linked to the Eastern Division Headquarters and the business community can also view what the camera is recording on their phones.

Nausori Chamber of Commerce President Praveen Chandra says 60% of Nausori Town is being covered by these cameras and he has also welcomed the increased Police presence.

He adds they are working with stakeholders to get more cameras installed in Nausori so the airport and industrial areas are also covered. Nausori Town Special Administrator Umar Kant Patel says there is a need to install more cameras in the Nausori Market and the bus stand.

He says there have been cases of theft at the bus stand.

Kant adds there is also a need for fast and easy communication between the businesses and the police and the need has been met by the setting up of a Viber group with the police and the business community.
