The Fiji Corrections Service has today confirmed that there may have been a breach of trust on the part of former Prime Minister and inmate, Voreqe Bainimarama in prison, and they are investigating the matter following which an update will be released on conclusion of the investigation.

This is in relation to questions sent by fijivillage News on what is being done by the Corrections Service to ensure the phone used for his pacemaker app is not used to contact people outside the prison facility.

Deputy Corrections Commissioner, Auta Moceisuva says a wooden case was made to lock his phone to avoid access but they are investigating the alleged breach of trust in using the phone for other purposes by Bainimarama.

Bainimarama was sentenced to 1 year imprisonment after being found guilty of one count of attempt to pervert the course of justice in the University of the South Pacific case.

Acting Chief Justice Salesi Temo had ordered the Commissioner of Corrections to map out a medical plan for the use of Bainimarama’s medical equipment and charging of his phone for his pacemaker app.

Moceisuva confirms that Voreqe Bainimarama has been allocated to Nasinu Prison.

He says Bainimarama is being accommodated in a safe, secure and humane facility, and the normal dietary scale applies.

Moceisuva says the only privilege extended to any prisoner relating to special diet is when the Medical Officer makes recommendations and approved by the Officer in Charge of the prison concerned.

Meanwhile suspended Police Commissioner, Sitiveni Qiliho has been allocated to the Pre-release Centre at Naboro.

Moceisuva says they have a duty of care to keep in safe custody any prisoner sent to them by the Courts and Naboro is one of those institutions that they could allocate any prisoner at anytime based on the criteria set as a matter of policy.

Qiliho was sentenced to 2 years imprisonment for the charge of abuse of office in the USP matter.
