Arrangements made for officers to remain on standby with club owners - ACP Driu

People are being assured of a safe Suva City as they gather tonight to ring in the New Year at the FM96 Big Night Out with Vodafone at Albert Park and the nightclubs.

The FM96 Big Night Out is an alcohol-free family event but people can bring their grog and have a good time with their friends and family until 1am next year.

Representatives from Opium, Deep Sea, O'Reilly's Bar, Friends, Insomnia, Bad Shah, Ivy Bar, Red Lounge and X Lounge met with Deputy Divisional Police Commander Central Timoci Yacabula this morning to ensure the safety of nightclub patrons and workers.

They requested to put at least 2 officers per nightclub and more patrol vehicles after 1am.

While speaking to fijivillage News, Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu says they met with nightclub operators earlier today, including security bouncers, and reminded them to operate within the ambit of the law, as they do not want a repeat of the incident that occurred on Sunday morning in Suva.

He says officers will be on standby tonight, particularly for the event at Albert Park, as well as at the wharf and throughout the central business district in Suva.

ACP Driu says arrangements have been made for officers to remain on standby with club owners and security personnel manning the main streets of Suva as well.

He adds that their focus will also be on traffic management and maintaining police visibility across the country.
