Minister for Disaster Management Sakiasi Ditoka

As water levels in all the divisions are approaching or are at a critical level, assistance through water carting will be provided based on an assessment of their need.

This has been confirmed by Minister for Disaster Management Sakiasi Ditoka who says they have approached the Ministry of Public Works and Infrastructure to organise a joint response plan including wide-scale water carting by vehicles to road accessible communities and marine vessels to Maritime communities. While responding to questions by fijivillage News, Ditoka says water carting will depend on the needs of the people and those areas which have a critical need will be taken care of first.

He says they are talking to all Divisional Commissioners on what their needs are before assistance is provided.

The Minister says a decision will be made once they receive their report.

Ditoka says some spots around Fiji are fairing more badly than others so they are getting information from all divisions first for a whole of Government approach.

He says the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education and other ministries are also doing their assessment.

He says they are looking to get barges to assist people in the Western, Eastern and Northern areas.

The Minister adds they are looking to get desalination plants for the future and adds going forward, they will be exploring more substantive and long-term solutions to help deal with this ongoing concern.
