Tyla put a modern twist on ’70s style in a vintage lace Gucci minidress at the CFDA Awards in New York Monday night.
The “Water” singer updated the sheer Tom Ford-era dress from Gucci’s spring 1996 show by layering it with Brat-green HotPants. The sheer black lace minidress featured one of the evening’s hottest trends, a plunging neckline, and was adorned with lacy floral motifs and scalloped edges. Her turquoise eye makeup echoed ’70s styles reminiscent of Studio 54, an era often referenced by Ford.
Since Sabato De Sarno has taken the helm, Tom Ford’s legacy at Gucci endures. At the brand’s spring 2025 show, WWD reported that bamboo collars and metal details were incorporated into jersey halter gowns, inspired by Tom Ford’s 1990s Gucci interpretations of 1970s Halston.
De Sarno expressed his delight at seeing Ancora red gain global popularity, with people wearing it beyond Gucci. He also joked about being the first to notice Charli XCX’s signature Brat green.
Tyla, who performed at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show earlier this month, frequently embraces vintage fashion. She wore an archival John Galliano design from the early 2000s at the 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards, filmed on Oct. 8 and aired a week later. Styled by Lee Trigg, the black sequined minidress showcased “Galliano” in green block letters. Tyla completed the look with knee-high slouchy snap boots from Y/Project.
At the BET awards in June, she opted for a vintage again, wearing a cutout Versace gown from the brand’s fall 2004 collection.
The 2024 CFDA Fashion Awards took place at the American Museum of Natural History in New York on Oct. 28, with Cynthia Erivo hosting. Honorees at this year’s ceremony included Coach, Michael Kors, Annie Leibovitz and finally, Erykah Badu, who received the coveted Fashion Icon award.
