There are over 5,500 registered women involved in Micro, Small- and Medium Enterprises ventures in addition to the 18,742 self-employed women and 4,650 women working in handicrafts.

President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere highlighted this at the South Pacific Business Development Awards Night with the theme Women-Led Micro-Enterprises Enriching Lives and Building Futures.

Ratu Wiliame says when women are empowered economically, they become key agents of change, fostering prosperity for future generations.

He says the theme is a powerful and fitting reflection of the transformative impact women are making in Fiji's socio-economic landscape.

The gala night held at the Vodafone Arena, saw women from over 400 SPBD centres across Fiji come together.

Elena Tinai from Saru Centre, Lautoka won this year's SPBD Businesswoman of the Year award in recognition of her remarkable contributions.

Ratu Wiliame says the holistic nature of women-led enterprises, which often focus on creating sustainable livelihoods, addressing social challenges, and nurturing the next generation, is clear.

He says as we celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit of our women, he commends the foundation that has been laid and the intense work that continues behind the scenes to elevate the status of women involved in MSMEs in Fiji.

Ratu Wiliame says the achievements of the nominees serve as powerful reminders of the limitless potential that lies within each one of us when given the right opportunities.

He says through the invaluable support of SPBD, they have been able to turn their dreams into thriving businesses.

The President says their courage to take that first step towards financial independence is an inspiration to us all.

He says in doing so, they have empowered themselves and the next generation.

Ratu Wiliame says as a tool for empowering women, many micro-enterprises are operated by women, especially through initiatives like SPBD, which provides micro-loans to help female entrepreneurs build their businesses by providing financial independence and opportunities for economic participation.

He says the MSME sector, has enabled many women to improve the living standards of their respective families, invest in education, and contribute to their communities.

The President says these businesses are key in alleviating poverty and enhancing gender equality in Fiji, and he is pleased that Fiji is now more focused on micro-financial facilities.
