Fiji Airways this weekend resumed flights to Hong Kong after a hiatus of almost three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tourism Fiji collaborated with Fiji Airways, Fiji Airports, the Chinese Embassy, and Tour Managers to welcome the first group of travellers.
Welcoming the visitors at the airport, Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka says as they welcome the first Hong Kong flight back to Fiji after almost three years, they are reminded of the profound impact the pandemic has had on our tourism industry and our people.
Gavoka says this resumption of international travel signifies hope and optimism for the future of Fiji's tourism sector.
He adds pre-COVID, Fiji was receiving close to 50,000 Chinese visitors a year.
Representing the Chinese Embassy, Counsellor Ma Guoliang says China and Fiji have a time-honored friendship, and the Chinese community have been an integral part of Fiji's multi-ethnic family for almost 200 years.
Guoliang says the resumption of flights between Hong Kong and Nadi marks the comprehensive restart of people-to-people exchanges between the two countries and will definitely boost China-Fiji exchanges and cooperation in various fields.
