BSP Financial Group Limited has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting mental health and community well-being by donating $10,000 to Lifeline Fiji.

This donation, which includes Christmas hampers for Lifeline Fiji Agents and office amenities, was presented at the peak of the festive season — a time of much celebration but also marked by heightened stress and emotional vulnerability.

While speaking at the event, BSP’s Chief Operating Officer, George Barratt, commended Lifeline Fiji’s counsellors for their dedication and tireless efforts, stating that the work of Lifeline Fiji goes beyond crisis intervention — it saves lives.

He says their approach, which combines the use of native languages and collaboration with local organisations, is both impactful and highly effective.

Barratt says their financial support ensures that this vital assistance reaches those who need it most, delivering the best possible outcomes.

According to data provided by Lifeline Fiji Director Jeremaia Merekula, from January to October this year, Fiji recorded 136 cases of suicide and attempted suicide, compared to 156 during the same period in 2023.

He says worryingly, the statistics indicate a growing prevalence of completed suicides among individuals aged 60 and above, highlighting the significant mental health challenges faced by this demographic.

Merekula says older adults, particularly those above 60, are becoming an increasingly vulnerable group in society.

He adds isolation, loneliness, declining health, and financial insecurity are common contributors to the rising number of suicides in this age group, and it is vital that our communities work together to ensure they receive the support and connection they need.

If you need assistance or someone to talk to, you can call the Lifeline Fiji’s toll free number 1543.
