31 people have been booked for littering offences under the $40 spot fine so far for this year.

This is according to the Suva City Council Acting CEO Bijay Chand who said few people have been taken to court for not paying their fines within the given time frame of 21 days.

Chand said few bus drivers who were fined due to leakage of oil from their engine at the Suva Bus Station and have not paid their fines have been taken to court as well.

He said the spot fine of $40.00 for litter offences is still in force and bookings will continue.

Chand said only persons appointed by the Department of Environment are authorized to book offenders and issue Litter Offence Notices.

Meanwhile, when Fijivillage asked about the issue where a massive amount of rubbish is left after a tournament, Chand said they cannot do bookings there because it’s a private facility and it comes under the sports council.
