Occupational Health and Safety regulations must be upheld by companies and organizations to prevent work-related safety and health risks.
This was highlighted by the Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations and Youth and Sports Parveen Kumar Bala during the Fiji National University National Training and Productivity Centre 2nd National Conference on Occupational Health and Safety.
Bala says that workplace injuries and illnesses could only be prevented if all stakeholders understood the hazards and work pro-actively rather than reactively.
He adds that Occupational Health and Safety audits prove that workplaces, where there are active health and safety commitments and proactive OHS management systems, are healthier, safer and more productive.
Bala says that the government is committed to ensuring that organizations complied to OHS policies to establish a safe and healthy working environment for their workers.
FNU’s Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohini Singh emphasized that health and safety at work is a human right and a basic requirement for sustainable growth and productivity.
Professor Singh says that OHS courses are offered at FNU through the College of Engineering, Science, and Technology and is a growing demand for our in-house courses due to its practical and hands-on nature and flexible delivery options.
