Wellington Sevens officials are expecting about 15,000 fans to attend each day of next weekend's tournament.
While the latest estimates, made a week‑and‑a‑half out from the event, are significantly short of Westpac Stadium's 34,500‑seat capacity, Sevens general manager Steve Dunbar was satisfied, given the tournament was in a "rebuilding phase".
Wellington Mayor Justin Lester has also brushed off suggestions the tournament's popularity was in serious decline.
Meanwhile, the Vodafone Fiji 7s team for the Wellington 7s is expected to be named this week.
Fiji will play Australia in their first pool match at 10.46am next Saturday before facing Japan at 2.10pm while Fiji's last pool match will be against South Africa at 6.18pm next Saturday.
The medal quarterfinals will begin at 11.38am next Sunday while the semifinals will begin at 4.16pm.
The medal final will be held at 7.30pm next Sunday.
