“We will never forget this!”
These were the words of Iosefo Verevou after scoring Fiji’s historic goal in the 8-1 loss against Germany yesterday in the FIFA Under 20 World Cup.
Verevou is giving full credit to his Rewa teammate, Setareki Hughes who placed the ball perfectly on his forehead.
He says the fact that it’s him and Hughes of all people, getting to share the honour of scoring the first goal for their country at a World Cup, and against the current world champions’ youth side, was an absolute dream come true.
Verevou has also dedicated the memorable goal to Setareki Hughes’ mother who died a few weeks ago.
He says she was such a wonderful person and had already bought her tickets for New Zealand to accompany her son and the rest of the team.
The former Saraswati College student says the fact that Hughes of all people provided the assist and he scored is special for that reason too.
Meanwhile, Fiji’s two other group matches will be against Honduras at 4pm this Thursday and Uzbekistan at 2pm Sunday.
We have to win these two matches to qualify for the round of 16.
In other matches yesterday, Brazil beat Nigeria 4‑2,
Honduras edged Uzbekistan 4-3 while Hungary thrashed Korea 5-1.
