Kevin Naiqama’s tears of joy have been one of the most enduring images of the Rugby League World Cup, but a tragic story has emerged involving the Fiji captain.
Naiqama’s biggest fan and West Tigers supporter Danielle Mason has lost her two-year battle with cancer, days before the Bati’s victory over the Kiwis last weekend.
Naiqama met Mason while she was receiving treatment in hospital this year and organised eight tickets for the 19‑year‑old and her family to the Tigers’ home game against Manly in August.
After the match, Naiqama gave Mason his game‑worn jersey and posed for photos with her in the stands.

Mason posted a number of photos on social media with Naiqama, admitting he had helped her pick up her fighting spirit by millions.
Naiqama will lead the Vodafone Fiji Bati this Friday with more to play for as he gets ready for the defending champions the Kangaroos.
Meanwhile a huge number of Fijians living in Brisbane and around Australia are planning to turn out in numbers at Suncorp Stadium this Friday to show their support.
Last night, former Bati captain and Media Manager Petero Civoniceva managed to secure a Fiji Supporters Bay for Fijian fans.
The Brisbane Fijians community have also informed Fijians and other Pacific Islanders about the area they will have to sit in.
Today, the Bati have an open training session with the fans at Easts Rugby League, Langlands Park.
The Vodafone Fiji Bati will take on the Australian Kangaroos at 10pm Friday.
The second semi will see Tonga taking on England at 6pm Saturday.
I hope to one day make up to this young man for helping me through such a hard time by takin him on a date my shout completely! 💜 #godbless pic.twitter.com/RBZPtjBFA3
