The Crusaders have not received instruction from Steve Hansen to play star recruit Seta Tamanivalu on the wing insisting it is their own idea.
Fiji‑born Tamanivalu is poised to debut for his new Super Rugby side in Saturday night's opener against the Brumbies in Christchurch.
After two seasons with the Chiefs, the 24‑year‑old who played three tests off the bench for the All Blacks last year has shifted south "to try something different" and step outside his comfort zone.
Tamanivalu has spent most of his career at centre but been used on the right wing in pre‑season scoring three tries in Friday's 33‑27 loss to the Hurricanes in Waverley.
Crusaders' assistant coach Brad Mooar said they have not received any direction from All Blacks coach Hansen to move Tamanivalu out wide.
The Brumbies meet the Crusaders at 6.35pm this Saturday.
Meanwhile the Blues will open the Super Rugby season when they take on the Rebels at 8.45pm this Thursday.
