Pacific Sprint King, Banuve Tabakaucoro has successfully defended his 100 metres title at the Pacific Games with a record time of 10.31 seconds.

He beat his own record of 10.33 seconds  that he had set at the 2013 Pacific Mini Games.

Tabakaucoro had the better start of all the athletes and won the race with a time of 10.31 seconds.

He beat Samoan sprinters Jeremy Dodson and Kelvin Masoe.

Tabakaucoro says to break a record it comes down to the competition on the day and Dodson and Masoe were perfect competitors.

He says it is a blessing to win gold after making a comeback to the sport. Tabakaucoro had a stint in rugby.

Tabakaucoro says if people have the right mindset and work hard they can achieve anything.

This is also his third 100 metres gold medal in the Pacific Games. He won gold in 2011 and 2015.

He will now take part in the 200 metres heats today. Jim Colasau will also represent Fiji in the 200 metres.

In the Women’s 100 metres race, Heleina Young finished second with a time of 11.82 seconds.

Papua New Guinea’s Toea Wisil won gold.

Fiji has also won three gold medals in Judo in the Pacific Games.

Shanice Takayawa won gold in the Women’s under 70kg category.

Nathalyn Takayawa won gold in the Women’s under 63kg category while Keresi Farouk won gold in the under 78kg category.

Fiji is in fourth place on the Pacific Games Medal Tally with 23 gold, 23 silver and 35 bronze.
